Checklist for Tramps

Not all trips are in extreme terrain or weather. If you are on a town walk you are probably more at risk from traffic than hypothermia, while on the beach sunburn, heatstroke and drowning are more common hazards.

However, for all tramps take the following:

Clothes:

  • Waterproof rain jacket and over trousers

  • Polyester or wool jersey, jacket or fleece

  • Thermal top and long johns base layer

  • Sun hat and warm hat

  • Gloves or mittens

  • Wool or fleece spare thermals to keep dry in your pack

  • Boots or trail shoes and socks

  • Spare clothes and footwear to leave in vehicle for after the tramp

Gear:

  • Comfortable pack and waterproof liner for clothing, gear and food

  • Head torch

  • Basic first aid kit including any personal medication

  • Sunblock and lip balm

  • Toilet paper and hand sanitiser

  • Plastic bag or light foam to sit on

  • Bag for muddy boots to keep the vehicle clean

  • Whistle

  • Mobile phone in waterproof bag – emergency services recommend using a cell phone first, before using a PLB, when assistance is needed.

Food and drink:

  • Eat a nourishing breakfast

  • Carry high energy food for lunch and snacks eg nuts, muesli bars, dried fruit, chocolate

  • Extra food in case of a delay

  • Water – carry enough for the whole day (up to 3 litres)

When you sign in before the tramp you will be asked to verify that you are carrying the correct gear for the type of trip you are going on. If you are venturing into alpine terrain, especially in winter conditions, you may need considerably more. Check with the trip leader if you have any doubts. Overnight trips require additional clothing and equipment.

The following are also recommended options:

For individuals:

  • Gaiters

  • Walking poles

  • Waterproof pack cover

  • Fire lighting kit

  • Sunglasses

  • Knife

  • Insect repellent

For the group to share:

  • High-performance emergency bag

  • Comprehensive first-aid kit

  • Locator beacon

  • Bothy bag

  • GPS

  • Fly sheet

(On all club tramps the trip leader will organise the locator beacon, GPS, first-aid kit and portable radios (if required) as detailed in of Footprints)
